Mark, I'm sorry that my remark offended you, but I hafta refer you to the following photo taken from Monte Kennedy's book.

This Hartley M12 stock could have been the poster child for some of the more clubby factory Handi stocks!

I'll freely admit that his rifle stocks shown in the Kennedy book aren't quite as bad as this, but I've also seen plenty more of his more-canoe-paddley versions on rifles pictured in various Gun Digests over the years. A superior workman but IMO certainly not a designer of slim, svelte, lively-appearing stocks.
Regards, Joe

Heh Heh...

Nah.......you give up too easily, Mark.

The above Model 12 example has a grip that was specifically determined by the customer. as were the comb and and butt dimensions. It's a competition gun. Hal either uses the toe line he did, or raises it and leaves a real "hang-down" grip.

I've looked at all the examples of Hartley's work I have.....including the other examples in Kennedy's 2nd edition checkering book. His style is on par with any good stocker of the era.........including monte carlos and even roll-over combs.

Beyond his penchant for maple and carving, Hartley's work stands up pretty well.....IMHO.
