95% ethanol and 5% water is an azeotrope, a constant-boiling liquid. You can't distill the water off. It must be removed chemically. Also, 200 proof alcohol is very dangerous as the alcohol wants to form the azeotrope and will remove water from any substance, especially human tissue. Trust me, everclear will be just fine.

Ah, nice to have a person with chemistry background to straighten me out! I will visit the package store today and pick up a bottle of Everclear.

My guess is the "real" spirits of wine used in 1800's London oil finish was nothing other than strong brandy. Buy a quart of good brandy, use 1/2 gill for the oil finish, and drink the remainder!

I am curious now, could someone please post a link to the recipe and how to apply it. And maybe if someone could also post a link
to a picture of a rifle or shotgun with a slakum finish, that would be really great too.
