I would be very careful substituting Rem STS with Win. 209's. I load 700x powder and the difference in switching between those 2 primers ( all other components remaining the same) can be as much as 5-600 PSI. This is a considerable when building LP loads for our sweet ol' doubles.---TOOL MAN

Is the Rem STS the one they use on their factory shells? If so, that's the only factory primer I've had misfires on, with two different guns. I won't buy factory Rem shells if I don't have to for that reason.

For all my years of NSSA skeet shooting I loaded compression formed AAs to the load in the WW book that had the asteric that it duplicates the factory load. While they worked fine in my Model 12s and over/under skeet guns, the firing pins of some of my old doubles hang up in the WW primers. I don't have that problem with Remington primers. That is why they are best to me.

JDW, please recheck your notes from your conversation with Hodgdon.
It should say that the CCI209 is a rough equivelant to the Rem209P and that the CCI209M is the rough equivelant to the Fed209A. Not much room for error here, especially with the older guns!
Win209/Cheddite/Fiocchi usually in between the extremes above.
One thing to note, I have seen the Win primer give lower pressures in seemingly identicle loads than the 209P....so even the basic order of "hottest" to "coolest" is in no way written in stone.

If you're looking for evidence that one cannot rely on brissance rankings, examine about any .410 data. The 209A, mighty in 12 ga applications, is an also-ran.
Of all the blithe, "off-data manual" component substitutions that can be made, primer substitutions are arguably the most perilous.
I use STS209s, Win 209s, and Fed 209As. But I am under no delusion that they can be randomly substituted. Each has advantages. STS209s tend toward the lowest velocity ESs. Win 209s give me best results in the 28, and are now the only primer I will use in AA .410 comp-formed hulls. For low-temperature conditions the 209A is king. YMMV.

I've always found W209s most versatile at the low end for pressure (more data) but I like the STS primers for the minor reason that they seem to drop into the index plate on MEC 9000G more consistently than W209s which have to be watched for flipping, canting in the plate and skating past the well, etc. I may get a lecture on deburring/adjusting drop tube but that is just my experience. With Winchester and Remington around 32$ the thousand, I'm interested in those Cheddites. I believe the extended MEC primer tray will handle 2 sleeves of primers (200) rather than 2000. I hope so as 200 is more than enuf a foot from your face.
