And speaking of fickle
Charles A. “Sparrow” Young, of Springfield, O., won the International Trapshooting championship at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893 with 99x100- gun unknown.
He won best average at the Mechanicsburg. O., shoot, on May 26, 1898 breaking 204 out of 210 targets using an L. C. Smith.
He broke 25 straight at the Grand American Handicap at Targets in 1900 when he shot under the nom de plume of “Robin Hood” as a rep for the Robin Hood powder company.
Later he was a demonstrator for the Baker, and shot as a professional for the Peters Cartridge Company and his Young Repeating Arms Co.
In 1907 he was shooting a Parker.
In the 1908 GAH Preliminary Handicap, then using a Winchester 1897 he tied the winning Amateur Score, 95 / 100.
At the 1913 GAH he won Professional Championship 197/200 at 22 yards with his Winchester.
He also went to an Ithaca SBT.

Baker made their N Grade Trap in 1906 and their single barrel trap in 1909. The N Grades are coooool guns.

Here is Sparrow holding his Ithaca. Looks to be a 5E. Must be something about those Ithaca SBT guns!

I passed on a wonderful Fox double trap gun at the Southern SxS about 3 or 4 years ago. Wish I could see it again. Anyone here buy it?

Put him in the same class then with Capt. Harold Money- NB's famed "Shootin'-est Gent'man" who shot only a M1897-- recalls what old Charley Waterman once wrote: "Never bet your money against the man who shoots a well-worn pumpgun"!!

Too nice for me to shoot 25,000 of WalMart "On Sale" loads through though.

Best,

Mike

Thanks. It has 32"; as far as I know the rib is factory and it does have ejectors. I have the Smith collector's letter stating so.

You're right.
Shooting that many rounds might break the "red transparent plastic front sight", which by the way, I find to be a major selling point.

Run with the Fox, you and I own the only factory replacement L.C. Smith vent rib guns that I have ever seen or heard of. Does anyone else own a vent rib Smith that was made before the advent of factory Smith vent ribs? Mine is about a 1907 OE Grade, 32" with extra set of lighter choked 30" barrels salvaged from an early O Grade non ejector gun. It is my favorite Smith shooting gun. The vent rib barrels are obviously a product of Hunter Arms. I am not sure whether the barrels or only the rib is a retrofit.

Webley and Scott made double guns used for trap. The late Percy Stanbury won 25 U.K national and 18 county championships, between 1925-1953. Whilst Percy,s gun may well have been an off the shelf W.&S.double having 30 inch full choke barrels, he certainley proved its capability as a trap gun.I have seen W.&S; guns built for trap shooting, usually with a Monte Carlo stock and beaver tail fore end,but they are seldom encountered.
