„Maschinengewehr Stahl“ indeed would be Machinegun Steel for the barrel steel. I must chase that a bit as I just do not remember it right off...

No. Not. I mean, it sounds very convincing and plausible, especially for a German native speaker, but still...

Shot-out machinegun barrels would not be thrown away in wartimes, but collected (in Great Britain, they were relined with the Salerno method). So, it is not impossible that steel might have been made out of it, and I am altering my strong statement accordingly.
But such advertisement terms were untypical for Germany and especially hunters did NOT much want to be reminded of the Great War by their own hunting shotgun.

Pierre Martin.
Back in the 19th century not only a famous steel industrialist, but also a producer of Chassepot rifle barrels. The town of Sireuil was strongly connected to his achievements and his foundry.

That said, my conjecture might still be wrong. Geco often sold cheaply and probably bought raw materials even cheaper, so one could of course suspect some loud-mouthed advertising. -- Only that in Germany, barrel steels ALWAYS were associated with a name, and NEVER with abstract praises, like in so many French barrel inscriptions.
