Thanks JayCee:

The pic pretty much confirms what I thought, which is that it is an "Outstanding Quality" mark but I don't know that I've seen it there before.

Kind Regards,

So I can be proud of owning a "best" DDR Simson double!

Thank you again for the information.

I should point out that I looked at its innards and everything inside is highly polished
and fit and finish are really great.

You sure can and there's nothing short about these examples with the only issue being choke, usually very tight. I think they are a sleeper/great deal in that they are made by pre-WWII craftsmen using mostly pre-WWII components at a post WWII, sort of anti-German, price. I stoned the overhanging scears on one of my examples and it really is a "go to gun" as far as 70mm cartridges. You just need to practice distance and not let the quarry get too close. As a shooter, you just can't beat them. And those quality marks aren't anything to be snubbed.

I really wonder who was applying those Simson trademarks/marks or were they already there?

Kind Regards,

Raimey

I picked up a wonderful 16ga German hammer sxs for a wall display of hammer sxs from around the world. It turned out to be really nice and put it in the safe and hung a hammer drilling on the wall. I've used it on a couple walk up dove hunts, lots of dove scattered around the desert here in late winter. Without going to the safe I think it too is a JP Sauer.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

I have made a very small gamble on this unsold lot at Holts. I just hope that what appears to be fairly superficial external rusting does not extend to the bores, which will depend on how well it was cleaned and oiled (if at all) when it was last used.

When I collect it I will seek the collective wisdom of the board to try to find out who made it for GECO?

... and the Baikal can be useful for steel shot in the future!

Always good to have a project.

In the current UK market for Baikal 12 bore singles, inserting a Bismuth cartridge instead of steel would double the value.

Sales value of the IJ-18 in Germany is between 0 € and 10 €, more leaning towards the 0-2 € side.

Values are relative, and when I collect the Baikal I may be tempted to fire off the box of 10 paper cased Baikal cartridges I was given years ago and have never dared to let off in any of my guns.

I did buy the .410 version many years ago and shortened the stock (now glued back together) for the children.

Cheap to buy even brand new, and soundly made, but I disliked the cocking/opening lever which is stiff, narrow and seems unnecessarily sharp edged.
