ordered the Deluxe with the smaller 20 gauge frame. I was told it will take a little longer to get it, but once quail season closes in February the wait really did not matter. I will be using the gun for desert quail mainly, occasionally shooting some skeet, trap, and sporting clays. My order was for 32" barrels but I have not owned a 20 with that length of barrels and started second guessing my choice. I shoot a fair amount of Mearns quail over the dogs and have a 28 and 20 gauge RBL with 26" barrels that have have been great game guns for the past 2 seasons. For this reason I do not see my self using the A10 for them. The desert birds usually are in flatter county and do not hold as well for the dogs..... When it comes down to it I guess I really do not have a good reason to buy a 20 gauge with longer barrels, but Lou has been such a great guy to deal with and has always been fair in taking my trades, and the A10 looked so nice. I just had to have one. I guess I am like Jeff Foxworthy explaining to his wife when she questioned why he need another gun. "Honey that a short range weasel gun, I need a long range weasel gun". Thanks for the help and positive responses to my question.
Phil

I have no sidelock overunder, and small gage would be a rarity,so I was thinking .. the standard grade a10, str8 grip ,32",28ga. May as well pick the rare combo!

So far, we don't know which frame Phil or Dick are ordering, and why. When we find out, this whole thread will become more interesting. Small frame. Why? Have Kolar for SC but eventually that will become too heavy and I want a lighter SC gun and Kolar won't build me one.(I live within easy driving of Kolar). I also intend to use it for doves or fixed position game shooting. I also need a "long range weasel gun"!-Dick

I just ordered an A10 deluxe with straight grip. I do not own any guns with this type of grip. I plan on using the gun for dove hunting. Does anyone not like a straight grip?

I am not a fan of the straight grip either, on any gun. One man's like is another dislike though. Most probably don't care for the type of dimensions I do. I like 30 or 32 in bbls, 14 3/4 in pull and 2 3/4 dah. I like a heavier gun (like a Parker) but then again I'm 27 6' 3" and weigh 260...

I would certainly not want a quail gun with barrels over 30", and 28" might just be perfect. Quite a different matter in the dove shooting business; 32 might be OK. Key here would be the dynamics of the gun; I like a lively feel, with about a neutral balance.

Straight grips are racey and sexy. but when you are hunting and carrying in right hand with firing hand on grip, the pistol grip or semi pistol grip guns hang a whole lot better in the hand. With a Port Arms carry it doesnt matter but up here in the Grouse woods, one hand is used to move aside too much stuff form whacking you in the face.!!! But if someone gave me a straight grip A10, i wouldnt complain!!!

Why do people prefer the field forearm instead of the target for hunting? I get that the field forearm is more slender which will cut a little weight....but I wonder if it is to short. The target forearm is longer which enables a more comfortable stretched out grip.

I thought I'd bring this thread back to life. It's now 14 months since the last posting. What are your small frame 20ga. A-10 experiences? I've got a 30" Platinum 20 bore that weighs 6lb 2oz. It balances on the hinges and is proving to be a great shooting gun. Only 800 rounds through it so far--but no issues. This is a pistol grip--field forearm gun. I just got a set of Trulock extended chokes for it, but have not had a chance to use them yet! So let's hear from A-10 small bore owners....Whattaya say???
