I have not even held a Merkel. The asthetics of these guns leave me cold, the engraving of any of the grades is...well, Germanic and does nothing for me. I'd likely take a file to one and sculp it and restock a field grade

Go hold one,a 147 or better, and your tune may change.
Also your gauge may change,as the 28ga feels like the 20ga.
The AYA is a good gun,but go look at the CZ or DeHaan, you`ll save some big bucks, tinker to your liking, and if lightning strikes-you are able to fix it yourself.

Merkels are available with a special order English scroll engraving. My Luxus Grade 201EL not only has very excellent scroll engraving, but outstanding marble cake walnut as well. Even has drop points, rarely seen on a Merkel. While mine is an O/U, their SxS guns also have the same options. Don't give up on a Merkel until you can get to a stocking Merkel dealer and check them out. Having said all that, I also like the AyA #2 very much.

Chuck for that kinda money you can get a nice between the wars European or British boxlock in 28 gauge with 2-1/2" chambers. According to Burrard's volume 3 the standard 28ga 2-1/2" load was 9/16 oz and 1-3/4 drams. Approximately the load you would shoot out of the .410s you are talking about. They usually weigh 5 lbs, plus or minus an ounce.

As a matter of fact here is a really cool hammgergun:

Treb, I am so diappointed in you. Shame on you!

Best,

Mike

I think you need to track down Bill Jaqua, last I heard he had the finest collection of 410 side by sides, see what he thinks!

Walt,
It'd have to be a 28" ejector 410. I haven't seen a good NID ejector 410 since I passed on one up in Seattle a few yrs ago for $3600 and one of our members here bought it. I'd pay good money for that one now.

CSMC Fox or baby frame Model 21. My real preference would be a VHE Parker, but a 28" example would be hard to find, and pay for.

Mr. Snyder,

American guns not boring? Come now.

I know: "To each his own" and "De gustibus non est disputandem" and all that, but...

The only "American" guns I find appealing are the Lindner Dalys.

Best Season's Greetings.

JC
