I'm looking into my next gun, a .410 sxs. I'm looking for input on these various guns and how you would rate them.
I have owned a #2 AYA and found it an acceptable quality gun, barely. I can simply buy one of these for less than $5k and go hunt.
I have not even held a Merkel. The asthetics of these guns leave me cold, the engraving of any of the grades is...well, Germanic and does nothing for me. I'd likely take a file to one and sculp it and restock a field grade to some quality wood. Another expensive project on top of the $4400 price.
I have some limited gawking at Parker Repro's. I'd have to buy a 28g, order .410 barrels from CSM and probably have a new forend carved in a small beavertail. Expensive route, but could be a fine gun when finished.

I think only a bespoke Purdey will do for you. Go for it!

Sounds like it boils down to if your wanting a project or not. If it's the challenge of the project your looking for. I'd say the Merkel is the way to go.
Galazans at present is just taking deposits of the repro. barrels and it's not a sure thing that they will ever be made. Because of this no one has seen a set of the .410 barrels and who knows how they will fit.
Personally I'd scratch the repro. off the list.

I'd go for an Ithaca NID. Forget this craze with off shore stuff.

Repros in .410 or combination 28/.410 are available so why not opt for one of them? If it is the expense that might be an onstacle I don't think you'll overcome it with a Repro 28 with an added set of Galazan .410 barrels when you consider the purchase price of the gun, the extra barrels and then the cost of having them fitted . . . topped off by the remorse of not having gone for the Repro 28/.410 in the first place. It's all about the aesthetics and the fact that you will NOT lose money by buying the original Repro 28/.410

I would look for a Engish boxlock with long barrels. Not easy to find but the hunt is half the fun. Anyone with money can buy a new gun. A vintage gun is a piece of history and a better investment.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Chuck, have a look at the Winchester Model 23 Classic in .410. It's built on the baby frame. Only 500 made. http://www.dawsonsdoubles.com/details.php?ID=1736

I'm not speaking for Chuck, but "all you need" has nothing to do with it!
