Yes, good catch! Lots of questions from that little tidbit:

1) As a practical man, Howe presumably had some business reason to go to London. Whom did he call on, and what if anything came of it?

2) Did he know Miss Becker (the future Mrs. Howe IV) before the trip or did they meet on board?

3) Where was Mrs. Howe III at the time?

And of course the burning question all us dirty old men really want to know:

4) Did they play deck tennis together?

Cheers,
Peconga

Well he was working for Whelen at the National Target & Supply Co. Washington D.C. at the time. He was also the authorized US repairman for Westley Richards.

I know nothing about shipboard romance. I and few thousand close friends crossed the Atlantic from New York to Bremerhaven, Germany aboard the USS Rose during January of 1964, there was no deck tennis.

Still no email or PM......Mjpetrov@acsalaska.net

Terry, I remember who ended up with that rifle, although I believe he has since sold it. I do have a few decent photographs of it that I will forward to you.

Tom: Welcome to the forum.
I believe that this is the rifle in question. Not a very good picture.

Oh, teacher, teacher, call on me. I don't know what end the bullet comes out of a rifle, but I know that a Lyman 103 is a very expensive tang sight. I know because I bought a neat little .22 Oberlies Highwall once and the seller offered to give me an enormous credit if I would leave him the sight. It's still on the gun.

A 103 was also made for bolt guns both 1903's and Mausers.
