Anyone live near Barry County, Michigan? The last address I have for James V. Howe was 49046 Delton, Barry County, Michigan. My information shows that he died there in March, 1969 but I have not been able to confirm it was the same Howe and I have not located a obituary.
Anyone know where any Howe rifles are that I might get a photo of?
Thanks, MP

Hello Michael,
I am currently about a county away from Barry county and have spoken with you a little bit about Mr. Howe in the past. My grandfather built custom Mausers and Springfields in his retirement and at some time he either corresponded with Mr. Howe or knew someone who knew him. At the old shop there is his two volume book signed by Mr. Howe. Ive tried searching online for a tombstone with his name on it but have not succeeded. Any leads and I could drive down there and look around.
I also have some pictures of engraved rifles that I have been meaning to scan and send to you, along with some engraving questions. My grandfather worked for the Peninsular Engraving Company in Detroit as a young man just prior to WWI and I cannot find any information about it. Ill try to get those pictures scanned next time Im back home and in the mean time let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Mike, presume you have on file photo of the rifle Howe made in 1922 for Whelen in .400 which TW later rebarreled to .35.

I'm fairly certain that he is the one and the same who died March 1969 in Barry county but I have no idea what he did the last twenty so years of his life. I have tried online to find an obit and well as some phone calls that netted zero. Drop me a line at mjpetrov@acsalaska.net and send you everything I have. I would be very happy to look at any engraved gun pictures. There is a lot of info on the net about "Peninsular Engraving",looks like they did a lot work for the auto companies.

Mark I have several pictures of that rifle but none good enough for publication. I believe that you have another Howe, is that correct? I may check with Townsend Bowling and see if he might have one.

Michael,
I believe you are correct in that they did a lot of work for auto companies. Back home there is a book of some drawings my grandfather did, advertisement style drawings probably for billboards. Any idea how many rifles Howe built under his own name? Is there any connection between him and Niedner?

Howe built a lot of rifles but like other makers who never or hardly ever marked his work most are on the loose and have not been identified. The ones in his books are easy to ID the rest not so easy. A lot of opportunities out there.

Mike, the Howe I have here is indeed Whelen's 1922 rifle.

Mike, the Howe I have here is indeed Whelen's 1922 rifle. I know about that one but thinking you have another. About a year ago when you were having your roof problem I was working with some Bob Owen files and there was a picture of a so-called Bob Owen rifle that looked liked a Howe to me. I THINK but not sure the picture came from you, now of course I can't find it in the Owen or Howe files.
