This was my own thought process when removing the stuck 243 cartridge from the old M70 barrel. I would simply cut away enough case-head metal to allow me to either grasp the remaining case head firmly or else to remove the case head entirely to allow the powder to drop out.

Good thought, but I failed to realize that using a hand grinder to remove the case head metal would generate heat. Fortunately when the primer fired, it blew straight out of the primer pocket and didn't set off the main powder charge. Also fortunately, I had the sense to keep everything valuable out of the way of the bore line and so the primer didn't hit me in the eye.

That happened 40 years ago and I was extremely lucky. YOU need to be extremely careful!

The intent is not do oil the primer but to allow some lubrication to get, hopefully, between the case and the chamber, just enough to get it to extract.

Possible but I would think if the case is jammed that hard.It is pretty well sealed.Even penetrating solvent work by eating on the rust or gum to loosen. IMO in this case it would have to eat brass or steel.Good lunch.Smile But hope the tool works great and solves the problem. Whitey

I have removed loaded rounds by attaching a drill bit to a rod that are both a loose fit to the bore size. I grind the drill bit end flat and sharpen it so it will cut the bullet tip to a flat surface, then a second rod and small drill bit are used to drill through the bullet. Attach a t handle or vise grips to the rods and turn them by hand.. Once the bullet has been drilled through , I pour lots of penetrating oil in to soak the powder and the primer and leave it for a couple of days. You can then hydraulic the primer out, usually pops out without too much pressure. Now the primer pocket can be drilled and tapped for a 1/4"NC thread and a threaded rod can be used to jack the cartridge out.

Friends:

We ordered the tool. My brother got it on Saturday. About 5 minutes after it arrived, he cranked the collet down over the case head, slid the slide, and pop.... out came the cartridge, slicker than wet Central Texas caliche.

I have been busy with a final paper and therefore somewhat distracted - sorry I havent filled everyone in before now.

Brownells Stuck Cartridge Removal Tool, like Ronco's Vegematic "...yes folks, it REALLY, REALLY works..."

Anybody need a slightly used Stuck Cartridge Removal Tool ? ( 10 bucks to Dave)

Thanks one and all for the help and suggestions.

Regards

GKT

Congratulations on the safe removed of the stuck round. Now that this is behind you please tell us about this custom rifle in caliber 35 Newton. What are you making the cases out of?
