A friend asked me for help in valuing a set of four Winchester Model 23 Pigeon grade. They have consecutive serial numbers and are in 12, 20, 28 and 410 gauges. They are new and unused. They were won at a DU dinner in the early 1980's.
It's not that hard to search the gun sites for model 23's. It's the matched set of four NIB that is throwing me off.

I doubt that there is a lot of value in the provenince of a DU win or in the matching serials; some, but not a lot. You might try valuing the guns individually and adding 10 - 20%. If actively trying to sell, put them as a group into an auction reserved at 75% of retail or minimum the owner will accept. That will tell the tale in short order.

Can you send good pictures of these guns? What are the markings and engraving?
Straight stock or pistol grip?
Value: $10,000, maybe more.

It would be difficult for me to get pics.
They are pistol grip. Engraving and percentage coverage seems similar to what I find listed on the auction sites as pigeon grade Model 23's. Wood is very nice.
However, I have just seen them once and they are a long way from where I am now. Don't expect to be looking at them again in the near future.

Well, considering that the only 28 gauge Model 23s made were made as part of a four gun set,and unless they were some special order, it must have one of them. They were the Golden Quails and the Classics, 500 of each gauge in each set. The Quails were straight grip with silver nitrate finish on the frame. The Classics were pistol grip with blued frame and gold inlays.

One of Model 23 28ga guns was made with small frame which adds a lot value alone. As I recall, it was one of the blued PG guns, but I am not sure which model it was.
A Springer Spaniel, a 6# double and a fair day to hunt.

I know the 28 and the 410 are on the small frame.

That is correct. The 28 and .410 in the Classic set has the baby frame.
The 28 in the Golden Quail set is on the standard frame and the .410 in on the baby frame.
BTW, the price just went into the $15,000 or so range.

Valuation for purposes of sale would need consider the horrible state of the economy. My horse sense tells me that this grade of firearm would be hard hit. If one thought they were worth 14k last year my guess is that to move them now he will be lucky to get half that.
