I carried the old Stevens 5100 last weekend in the rain (scored a double with it, too!) and it developed some rust on the action. Gonna take the steel wool to 'er; how do I do it? Do I use a little oil, etc? The action is polished (whether that's original I don't know); should I use some wax, etc. to minimize this next time? Thanks...

I know some will disagree with me, but I suggest you try some good quality oil and coarse rag first and rub hard. I also use a pencil eraser for small spots. 0000 steel wool and oil will work, but be judicious in the use and only as a last resort. The action was originally case hardened, I believe (I have one in .410 that showed some slight signs of case color until I began restoration).

Kroil and Kleen Bore's Formula 3 Gun Conditioner have worked for me Fin. And for protection, Johnson's Paste Wax helps esp. if you warm the metal prior to application. So there are birds around Hill City?

Sunday we got 12, hunted in the rain in the morning and got pretty wet; snow in the PM but not enough to bunch 'em up. Lost a few; saw lots more. A few quail too. Don't tell anyone though! Headed back TG weekend.

0000 wool and WD-40 will take off surface, light rust and maybe not cut through the bluing.

After hunt care goes a long way to prevent rust. I have hunted salt marshes in the rain and your gun will literally turn brownish red with a light rust by days end. If you don't address it, it will turn into damaging deep rust in short order. Like the next day. I break the gun down into it's basic components. Wash the barrel(s) in warm tap water and dry. Wash all exposed metal that came in contact with the salt spray with a warm water soaked rag. Dry the metal with warm air after you wipe the water off helps. Then coat with oil. Removing the stock from the metal isn't always necesary but is good insurance against rust in the inletting and can be done later because you are usually to tired to mess with it that night. This has helped to keep my guns rustless.
