When was it and who made it.
A friend has a gun, that as I remember, is from approx. 1900 that has a removable choke.
Early pump as I recall.

Hi Mike. I believe that pump shotgun and choke was made by Roper. A few examples exist and turn up occasionally.
Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought stupid, than open it and confirm.

I think you're correct. I remember seeing a "screw-On" choke in a Sears catalog reproduction, from 1903 or thereabouts, that was basically a threaded ring with a very short taper. It screwed on the outside of the muzzle, which was obviously threaded, also.

I believe it was in Greener's book "The Gun and it's Development".

Roper is the one I was thinking of.
Thanks!

Terry,
A friend in Arizona inherited a Roper as part of a collection 17-18 years ago. In okay condition, 12ga as I remember, and very fragile looking. For obvious reasons we/he never fired it.

The claim is that the Roper shotgun was the 1st repeating shotgun to use cartridges. The screw on (not screw in, as Jani correctly points out) choke was a bit later. The gun pictured in the auction does not appear to have the Roper choke device. Here is Sylvester Ropers, 1868 with another of his inventions, the steam carriage. Pete
