First, let me say I do not know this seller, and have no interest in buying the rifle, just thought it looked like some pretty good workmanship. That being said, just curious if anyone would like to hazard a guess as to who the builder was. The work looks good enough that I have to believe it is a name we would know. Here is a link to the auction with more photos. Gun Broker Listing Again, I have no knowledge of the rifle or the seller, just hope to stimulate some discussion. John

When I started my high-wall project and started looking for parts I looked at this rifle. It's well done but there a coupe things I don't care for such as the stippled top parts and the receiver sight mounted on the side. The price kept me away from it and suspect that's why it's been listed for as long as it has. I have no idea who the make was and did not ask for more info.
When your looking for a Winchester 1885 you have to use a lot of search terms such as hi-wall, hiwall, high-wall, highwall and model 1885.

IMO it would be a lot more attractive if it had:
No stippling No receiver sight mounting Forearm shortened 8" from the rear Opening bid lower by $1000
Too bad. Workmanship appears excellent but styling is not. Regards, Joe

Agree with Joe about the styling and the price. First thing I'd do if I had it is give the wood liposuction and haul out the plug screws.....
One of the members of the Single Shot Rifles forum on 24hourcampfire.com just bought a Lo-wall .218 which has some of the features of this rifle and is not identified as to maker. I have urged him to post here and ask if anyone has a clue, but don't know if he will.
That Lo-wall has a "dropped forend" or "super beavertail" like this Hi-wall, scaled to the action size. But this style of wood is more appropriate to a target rifle like the Hi-wall than a hunting rifle like the .218 IMO. Is there a better name for a forend shaped like that (I think I made those up....)?

I'm a serious 22 RF target shooter & an ex-squirrel hunter and I looked at this one pretty hard. This one looks as if the rifle was intended for squirrel hunting in a gentlemanly fashion, maybe with one of those old Unertl small game scopes and that SST and maybe an old-timey tooled leather carrying sling with hooks on both ends. Those sling eyes don't lend themselves to serious target work. The side mounted Lyman is just awful. But what really puts me off is the horrible blue (?) on the breech block. I'd consider half the starting price to be reasonable.

Thanks everyone, nice to hear others take on it. Styles come and go, but quality workmanship is always in style. The rifle does have a bit of a 1950's look to it, and the Lyman rear sight looks very out of place.
Thanks, John

Maybe the Lyman is attached by some method other than "screws twisted into holes drilled into the receiver". I think it's a great rifle at some price.

I like everything about it except the grip cap and the price. In my opinion, there is no better way to put a rear sight on a Hiwall than to install a Lyman 66. Much better than the dang tang sight.
