Tacky looking engraving, beautiful Damascus in the barrels.

I love photos like this, but I'm always afraid to try this myself ... with my luck, the rooster would bleed on my gun and screw up the finish. Sweet revenge for the pheasant, though. TT

Ian,

It is a grade 1, 10ga. According to Walt it was made in 1919, after Ithaca had stopped advertising damascus barrels. It is possible that it was a special order. And you are correct, stars & stripes damascus.

I owe a "Thank You" to Doug Foreman. He spotted it at Joe Salter and let me know.

That floral engraving pattern was introduced in mid-1915 as the No. 1 1/2 but by 1919 had become the No. 1 as Ithaca thinned out their plethora of low grades. Likewise by the 1919 Ithaca catalogues all composite barrels were gone. This gun is a fine example of never say never in these old guns. Those barrels are much finer then what would have normally appeared on a No. 1 1/2 or a No. 2. The No. 3 normally came with Chain Damascus barrels, so these were likely originally intended for a No. 4 or higher.

I purchased RST shells, nice shot #5. A bit pricey, but I don't shoot much 10ga.
