As to the CSMC lasercut checkering being dark on some wood, from WW-II into at least the 1960s it was quite common to brush the checkering on a gun with oil stained with dark pigment to set the checkering off from the general color of the wood.

Walter, my NIDs work just fine. I did own a 12-gauge No. 1E in the 441xxx range that would kick open on firing, but it hit the river of commerce.
