I want to have a couple of Guns customized to these specks. 1st a Ruger #1 Chambered for the .50-110 win, 24 - 28" Barrel, With the Correct twist for shooting 250gr - 450gr Jacketed bullets At Close to origanal factory velocities.
2nd is a T/C Contender pistol 14" barrel in a .50 cal cartridge, hotter than the S&W .500, Maybe the .50 beowolf or some wildcat cartridge somewhere between the S&W & the .50 Alaskan. So lets hear your opinions on these options & why.
These are firearms I someday plan on making. Hopefully in the next couple of years. Lets Hammer out the pros & cons & fiqure out what the best cartridges are for this.

How about a SxS double rifle based on the Farquarson/Ruger #1 falling block action, single selective trigger, single lever & block, selective ejector, in .30-06 or .270 under 7.5 lbs ??

The Contender is not big/strong enough for the hot .50 cals. It's limit is about the 50-70. However, the Encore will handle the 50 Alaskan, 500 Maximum etc. JD Jones of SSK is your best bet for talking through this one. I would stick to the rimmed cases. The 50 Beowulf was designed for the AR15 and has a rebated case. The Ruger you describe should be OK but my personal preference would be to have it built on a High Wall pattern. I would build the Ruger #1 into a 500 NE or similar.

Just be sure you have a real purpose for these guns. Not that I haven't had a couple odd ball firearms from time to time, but you are heading into pain in the butt territory for ammo and the pistol will be something of a beast to hang onto when fired. I suggest you find current equivalent cartridges so you can grab a box and go shoot, and they will also be more easily sold when you tire of the adventure.

I could never quite see the sense in pushing that short stubby 350gr .50 caliber bullet out of the .50-110-350. The .50-100-450 always seemed like a better round to me. Of course the Bison were mostly gone by the time these rounds came out in the Winchester Model 1886 anyway!

The Ruger #1 in the .50-110 win chambering is something I have wanted for several years now. I Read a article on this particular chambering. A Guide had wrote about taking a client elk hunting back in the mid to late 30's. The hunter brought a Winchester 1886 chambered in .50-110. He made a 150 yard shot on a bull Elk that was facing him. The guide wrote that it was the Only time he had Ever seen a bull Elk picked up & summersaulted in the air & the Elk never moved other than the Flip.!! I decided I wanted a Rifle in that chambering!
The T/C Contender or Encore, I am leaning towards the pro hunter with a 15" barrel. It is going to be a problem. I want a BIG BORE handgun cartridge, but I don't want to break my wrist's. I am even considering going all out & making a new Wildcat chambering. Something like .600 N.E. only shortening it up by alot!!

Have you shot the S&W 500?
I have, pretty extensively too with one of the heavier performance center models.
Brass and bullets are readily available and full hit loads are pretty intense.
Terminal energy can be outstanding too.
Do you think you'd really want to run hotter/heavier recoiling loads than max SW500 handloads in something like a T/C?

Tinker: I have only shot a couple of rounds out of a Smith in .500 S&W. I did however shoot about 25 of the .460 S&W What a Awsome hand cannon! The recoil wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The Gun I shot was a 8" model that has the Ported barrel end in.! If I could get the .500 S&W to shoot at the .460 S&W velocities then we have something!!!
Yes I Know I am nuts.! LOL! But I want to build something like that in a T/C pro hunter pistol. I will have it ported to help with the recoil but if you can get the Velocities of a .460 in the .500 that should be a Unbelievable weapon!!
