About the only thing "hard", where French guns are concerned, is dating them accurately. They were as good as anyone else when it came to proofmarks (better than quite a few) and other information, and some French doubles include short novels written on the barrel flats! But unlike the Spanish, Belgians, Italians, Germans etc, they did not use date codes.
