Hi. I went to a gun show today in MT. Pleasant, Texas and this guy had 2 Parkers for sale. The VH was badly abused, but I walked away with a 10ga. GH. If someone has a book, can you please tell me the configuration? Capped pistol grip? Barrel length?

On the bottom of the barrel flats:

"2" on the rear lug - frame size I suppose
"J" below and left of the hook on bottom
"D" below and left of the J
and big 5 little 7

There is an "x" on the lug for the forearm.
Damascus barrels,and they are an even 28". They ring like a bell.
Capped pistol grip and haed and chest of lab on point buttplate with peak on the top of the buttstock. 1 7/8 dac, 3 1/4 dah, 14 lop.

I hope I am right on the patent dates. They were very small. Does the above info. sound right for this gun?

The Grade 2 Parker in 10 gauge were called EH Grade, not GH Grade as the other gauges were.
There were 2,160 EH Grades made with Damascus barrels and 63 with steel barrels.
The first grade 2 hammerless Damascus barreled gun is serial # 55292 made in 1888. You gun was likely made in 1888 or 1889.

What is your barrel lenght?

Thanks Don for the education. This is my first 10ga. ever. 2 7/8 chambers. The barrels are 28" and they ring true. That's what threw me, for being a 10ga gun, the barrel length. The bores have no pitting, dents, dings, bulges. The barrels touch at the muzzle. It is tight and on face, lever in center. The reason I thought it was a GH was it had the typical GH engraving: 2 partridges/quail left side, 2 geese/ducks in flight right side, and 2 larger engraved birds on the bottom, standing. It may be labor day before I can get pictures up and going. I only gave the guy $400 so I hope it's not all bad.

The engraving for the 10 gauge EH grade is the same as the GH grade.

We don't "know" his gun, 56867, is one of the 69 28-inch barrel 10-gauge quality 2 Parker Bros. hammerless guns recorded in The Parker Story. We "know" the records show there were 69 28-inch barrel quality 2 10-gauges.

Typing in the serial number 56867 on the research letter page at the PGCA web site reveals they do have records on that serial number -- http://parkerguns.org/ The PGCA has records both from the "Stock Books" and the "Order Books" while the published Parker serialization book was produced from only one of those sets of books, I don't remember which right now.

On most Parker Bros. doubles the rib matting stops about 1/16 to 1/8 inch short of the end of the barrels on unmolested guns. If the rib matting extends to the very muzzle that is a good indictaion the barrels may have been cut.

Correct. We know the records show 69 and we know the records are incomplete. Then again, If I recall correctly, don't the numbers published in TPS include extrapolations?
