The ringing of the barrels indicates how securely the ribs are attached to the barrels. The barrels should be tapped at various points up and down the barrels to get a true picture. Cut barrels ring just as well as non-cut barrels so long as the ribs are tight.
The statement about the barrels being the heart of the gun is correct because in order to shot well the barrels must be "true" and flaws in the barrels are much harder to correct (and more expensive to repair) so that the gun shoots well and looks good.

If the SB doesn't show the serial number, but the PGCA website shows that there are records on the gun, then it is likely that the order book entry for that gun survives. A PGCA letter should tell you what the original barrel length was and probably to whom the gun was sold. Get the letter.

That bead is off center enough to make me bet it was moved,the most obvious reason of course is back after the barrels where cut.That and the matting going the to the end of course.I don't need a letter to tell me they have been cut.

Another thing that confirms to me the barrels have been cut is they are to far apart at the muzzle.

I find it interesting that with all the cut barrel guns out there, I don't often see one that was cut 'poorly', i.e. at an angle or otherwise not perpendicular to the axis of the bores.
When your average gunsmith cuts a set of barrels, how does he do it?

GregSY, the gaps where the keels were are soldered closed and the muzzle is dressed, squared up, with a hand file.

italiansxs, maybe it was bad light or bad angle, but the barrels do touch at the muzzle and they ring. They are an even 28". That is what led me to belive I was looking at a gun with original barrel lenght at the show. I guess I should have noticed the bead off center. Well, at least through this experience I got information to look for the next time I consider buying a Parker - if the matting goes all the way to the end, it equals cut barrels. I guess I just have a shooter. Thanks for the help.
