A very close friend of mine is a dedicated waterfowler who hunts at least 2 days per week for the entire season. He would like to go "Old School" and get a 3" Superposed as his go to gun. My concern is how well it will hold up to shooting 3 inch steel shells through it at a reasonably high volume. And it will be mostly steel I can assure you. I understand the better no-tox alternatives available for vintage guns but lets assume 75% of the shells it digests will be high velocity steel. The chokes would be professionally opened accordingly. Have any of you any thoughts or experience in this arena? Thanks in advance. Dan

Who cares about the gun??
Why would you want to use steel in the first place?
Only under the best of circumstances, which rarely happens, that it does nothing but wound game, and we owe it to the animals we hunt to at least do it with the best stuff out there and that is not steel.

Over and unders are difficult to open and load in a blind, due to the large angle required to access the lower barrel. If he wants old school, get a Parker Repro steel shot Special.

You've never shot much of the modern steel or hunted with guys that do apparently. The new stuff kills them plenty good enough, the only reason I shoot anything else is that I only shoot old guns. If I hunted with modern guns I'd shoot steel no problem.

I agree, steel can kill but not anywhere near as good as lead. And the non-toxic stuff out there has better ballistic characteristics then lead. So why wouldn't you use the new non-toxic ammo??

That's what I figured; all comes down to money, I think I'll hunt deer with a 22 rimfire since the ammo is so cheap even cheaper than a box of 30-30 rounds so I'll just wound it and follow the blood trail until it dies. Because I'm that sort of guy, real cheap.
Steel is junk and it always will be because most hunters don't spend the time practicing to get good with the inferior ballistics of steel.

Steel is fine if the gun is made for it. If money is not a concern, buy the non-tox alternatives and have at it. Lead cripples too. It'll happen on thousands of dove hunts in a couple of weeks. Agree with the O/U handling issue in the duck blind. Can be a pain, and it's the loading that can really be the dangerous part of the equation. Best not to bring 'em to a crowded blind. I prefer a Fox double or Winchester Mod 12 when I'm feeling like going 'old school' but to each his own.
