Hi all, SDH has a real fun article in the most current issue of the Shooting Sportsman. It's about why we love our doubles so much and what kind of shooters/collectors, etc we are (he puts us in catagories). Thi is part one, I can't wait to read part 2.
This is just a fun read. I enjoyed it a lot. My hats off to you Steve!!!
All the best!

Thanks geedub, I often wonder if anyone around here reads SSM, Or my column... (I guess you are the sole engaged party?!?)
It was a very fun story to write, sort of homage to some of the influential double gunners in my life. I think you will like th second part even more, our pal Daryl reappears, and a couple other characters know around these parts. Thanks again, Steve

Ah, the coveted Bohemian Kronen Drilling by Gustav Fukert(Johann Fukert-1830), k.u.k., Hoflieferant, Weipert probably by Ferdinand Fukert, the craftsman at the time at Bahnhofstrasse 578, Weipert. Was there any adjustment in the transition to the G. Fukert such as overcoming a distraction by the exposed hammers?
Also Ronald Mahan's "In Defense of Drillings" on page 10 maybe should have waited until this issue to reply. I'm not sure he has his facts straight on his "Buhag Suhl - Handwersarbein" Ferlach Drilling. I guess a BUHAG could have peddled in Ferlach but there are just too many talented craftsmen there to import a BUHAG, unless it was a matter of economics.
Kind Regards,
Raimey rse

Yes, many of us, if not the majority--I supect read SSM.
I especially like the articles by Doug Tate as to my mind he really researches the various guns and gunmakers he writes about.
Since Vic Venters has been assigned the role of writing about gunmaking and gunmakers the gunmaking articles from SSM are of greater interest to me and much focused upon the technical details with an excellent mix of personal details of the craftsmen as well as the subject. The detail that he enters into in articles such as the two part about color case hardening with Brown's was excellent. The last artice about Hollands method of ensuring concentric boring and finishing of barrel tubes, compliments (with more detail) the Holland & Holland Video which shows the striking and measuring of barrel tubes.
SSM would do well to think about some articles about the double gun gunmaking craft and craftsmen.
I greatly miss the articles written by Crosschisel and McIntosh in SSM about gun repair and wish the two of them would do another series of articles. Those series of articles by David and Michael plus the articles by Vic Venter on gunmaking have been the best produced by SSM related to gun repair and gunmaking.
What say ye: David T.?
In general, SSM is gaining my respect and interest. With the economy like it is, it must be tough to produce a magazine like SSM and DGJ,and have enough advertisers to make a profit. Hats off to both of them

Hello Raimey,
If one is to have a drilling, I agree, it should be a Fukert!

SDH, you are a superb author. Many thanks and I always read your article second. Major Peabody is first, sorry.

Steven, I am Daryl's friend and I live in Belgium. Past yaer when Daryl came to visit me he also offer me your book (signed by you). Daryl scanned your article and send it to me by mail. B.T.W. I like it, and wait the next. I think on the photo it is Daryl's Lajot, Lajot was one of the top artisan makers in my country. Marc.
