I agree, love 10 gauge black powder loads, I used them for upland hunting; nothing like the KABOOM of a BP load. I used the 10/12 for clay games because they're a lot cheaper, or they used to be when Winchester AAs were $4.50 a box. Steve

Has anyone pubished information concening how much pressure is reduced when firing a 12 gauge shell in a 10 ga. using Gauge-Mates or Chamber-Mates? I'm yet to see any good data on this.
If the internal barrel volume of the 10 ga. is 20% greater than the 12 gauge, will the pressure therefore be 20% less? No, the issue is wad base area. If you get similar velocities, then the 10 bore pressure would be the 12 bore pressure divided by the 10 bore wad base ared over the 12 bore wad base area.
Can this be calculated? Or does it need to be accurately measured via machine? Calculate as above, for a general idea of pressure. There are relatively simple and inexpensive glue-on strain gage pressure transducers available, along with soft-ware for a lap top.

If the internal barrel volume of the 10 ga. is 20% greater than the 12 gauge, will the pressure therefore be 20% less? Considering nominal dias of .775 & .729 bbl volume of the 10ga is 13% greater than that of a 12ga. Volume ratio of circles = D²/d² thus .775²/.729² = 1.13 or 13% greater for the 10ga. Real;ize of course while the 12ga shell is inside the chamber reducer the dia of the inside will be essentially the same as it would be in a 12ga chamber. You would thus have essentially the same "Chamber Pressure, though you would have the benefit of the insert walls & would be operating on a smaller dia than a 10ga shell. The increased volume would come into play only after the charge had cleared the shell & entered the bore proper.
