2-piper, I think you are right on the "2 3/4" case" mark. I have seen it before and have a high end Greener 16 ga. , made ca. 1900, marked that way, too. I wonder who might have made the hammer gun in question for Jeffery.

Daryl, it looks like the work of Midland. On mine the 2 3/4" is just marked on the forend fastener on the barrel. Quite small and probably put there by the Maker. Lagopus.....

Terry, I agree with your interpretation of the written rules pertaining to chamber length. However because the proof test charges [powder and shot] are higher for 2 3/4 chambers than for 2 1/2; it will be appreciated that the proof marks of the day failed to differentiate between the applicable chamber lengths. This could well be the reason for the supplemental chamber length marking. Following the introduction of Nitro powders the rules of proof were ammended, such that 2 1/2 chambered guns were marked 1 1/8 ozs max, and 2 3/4 chambered guns were marked 1 1/4 ozs max. Perhaps contributors active in the English gun trade could offer advice on this issue?

Roy, I am attaching a picture of the proofmarks on one of a pair of Greener G70 Imperials I once owned. Note that the proof is for 2 1/2" and 1 1/4 oz. I believe these guns were rebarreled in the 1930s. I have seen this same proofing on two other Greener Imperials, but am not sure I have seen it on other guns. Does this seem to not follow the general rule we use ?

I have a problem each time that I try to edit this post it just repeats the post!apolgies to all.
Daryl, The combination of a 2 1/2 chamber and a 1 1/4 oz load proof mark is a first for me. At the time that you owned these guns did you measure the chamber depth?.A G70 Greener that I once owned, was marked 1 1/4 ozs max and the chambers measured 2 3/4! The possibility exists that the 2 1/2- 1 1/4 ozs combination was a proof house marking error.
