Just shot this gun about 30 times this p.m. What a delight for a 6 1/2# gun. First patents are from 1863. It is ALL bar in wood with rebounding locks and very pretty wood for the period. Just a neat pleasure to own and shoot such a gun. It will get huns in a month or two.

Here is a .577 Snider rifle by the same maker. Unfortunately, no longer mine.

The butt on top one has lovely wood on it. I like it probably because it looks much like a French piece.

Joseph Smith [1851-1895]Gun and Pistol maker;also gun lock and barrel maker.From 28,Loveday Street,1851-1859. 28&29 Loveday Street, 1860-1895.
Daryl,a very unusual gun, appears to built using Needhams patent action [patent #1544 of 1862].This is the first example that I have seen by this maker; nice find!

Roy, the pictures don't show it, but I think it's the J. Smith patent of Dec. 16, 1863, # 3171, and use number 670. I am grateful that another member here made the gun available to me.

An interesting feature is the hinge pin. It is removable like an early forend pin. When the hinge pin is moved to the left, the barrels and attached forend come off. Here's a photo that gives a bit more info.

Daryl,

Beautiful gun! However, you should probably wait more than a month to take it after huns, or the boys at FWP might get annoyed

Clayws, I like to get ahead of the "game hogs". In reality, I start thinking about bird hunting again on around July 1 and look at the calender a couple of times a day to "make sure".
