Idared,
Your notes almost surely came from the Monty Whitley description of the rifle. I don't know how he got the "Stevens Pope" when it is clearly marked "H M Pope", but that is how his web site described it.

Thanks Terry I do believe that is where they did come from and I appreciate you and Michael getting them straightened out. The added info you have supplied is great also. Many thanks again to you and Michael for all.

The King-Pope has a trigger modification I have not seen before and wondering if others have. There is a flat spring with a roller mounted on the underside of the receiver tang. The roller pushes up the sear and holds the rear of the bolt tight and in place. The striker sear has a piece of hardened steel soldered on it. I say that it’s hardened because there is no wear or marks on it.

My friend John Wills and I headed off to the “Fort” (100 miles south of Anchorage) for a couple days shooting Wednesday. It was and is still hot as heck, now this may not seem like anything to the rest of the world but last year we had about three days during the summer above 70 degrees. It was in the mid-80’s both days. Alaska is on fire and the state is under a blanket of smoke, the rivers are rising, fun in paradise ;-). http://www.ktuu.com/Global/story.asp?S=10682331Anyway back to shooting I took the Ross King-Pope 1903. I removed the Weaver 330 and replaced the rings with 1” ones and mounted the only modern scope I own, a Unertl Hawk 4X. I did all my shooting at 50 yards to try out some different bullets and with the 4-power scope I could see the larger 200 yard benchrest targets OK. I used nothing but 16.0 grains of SR 4759 and Remington Large rifle primers. All loading was done with an old Lyman 310 tool.

About a decade ago John and I designed a Hudson type .30-caliber bullet and John made me the mould. With 1-20 mix the bullet drops out of the mould .300” with the last two larger bands .308” no sizing needed. I’ve used Alox-Beeswax and it works well but when it gets hot (for here) it does not always do the job.

Next I tried a Lyman-Pope mould using Alox-Beeswax. By then it was 84-degrees so I shot five with the Alox then I shot five with my MP-1 ( a lube I made for warmer weather).

Things were looking good but I did not have any of the Wills bullets lubed with my MP-1 so the next morning when it was just a little over 70 I shot 10 shot group using the Wills bullets with Alox. Seems Mr. Pope knew what he was doing. I know the rifle was made for jacketed bullets but I like lead.

Before I move to 100 yards I need a much bigger target or a scope with a little more power ;-).

Michael,
Im surprised how much the lube change made In the hot weather. I had no Idea it could make such a difference.
Its nice when things come together and work great too.
