Mike, I too leave my few variables set on their lowest power and use binocs for scanning, IMO it's one less opportunity for Murphy to strike by showing me a moving 99-pointer at 10 yds when my scope is set on 9X, for instance!

Here's another pic of a rib I'm doing for one of Whitey Hanson's low walls right now, please pardon the photo's darkness and lack of polish on the steel but I wuz in a hurry when photoing. You can see that I've begun shaping the nose of the rib and have fit the bottom rear of the rib to the barrel's breech tulip, and have also drilled & counterbored for the attaching screws. The Winchesters require that the rib be attached via screws so that it can be removed and won't interfere with the receiver/forearm flanges when unscrewing the barrel for whatever reason.

It would be fairly easy to space the attaching screws so that they're positioned under the rings when the scope is installed, and thus somewhat less noticable. I've used as few as 2 6-48 screws on light kickers but prefer (at least) either 3 6-48s or 2 8-40s on heavier kickers.

If you'll email me your snail addy I'll send you a steel rib section, treeblood1 aht ayowell daht cahm.
Regards, Joe

Hi, Joe. Email coming. I assume (you know what that makes of u-and-me...) that a "thick-side" highwall with a 26" #3 tapered oct. barrel in .25-35 WCF is gonna be a LIGHT kicker, no?

Mike,

I had a thick side high-wall take-down with a skinny little round barrel chambered for the .25-35. It had a very mild recoil, so I am pretty sure your #3 will be even more pleasant to shoot (if not to carry!) My only concern with your tapered octagon barrel is getting the taper on the blocks appropriate... but working with octagon flats rather than a curved surface makes that somewhat easier. Sounds like a neat project.

Congratulations,
Froggie

Froggie, I've done a number of these projects now and haven't encountered any particular difficulty with barrel taper so far. Apparently the taper hasn't been enough to overpower the scope's range of adjustment or the bullet's trajectory. To give you a better idea of my basis for my opinion on these projects, I've used scopes and mounts in sizes & types ranging from 2" Unertl 20X to 3/4" Weaver J2.5 so I'm fairly confident about future results.

I'm still tweaking on your FrankenBallard but it's on the back burner for now, too many honeydos! How's your Maynard project coming along?
Best regards, Joe
