Doug, that is an awesome piece of wood with some the best wrist grain going. You are right, it should stand up to some serious abuse before that wrist would ever let got. That peice was grown to be a gun stock.

That's not feather crotch on the the 8 bore. But it is absolutely some of the finest English with dark, reddish brown background and high contrast black streaking you'll ever see. No feather, but wonderful figure. I much prefer this to feather crotch. Beautiful.

Aren't figure and grain two different things?

I thought the former wasn't always a good indicator of the latter.

They are two different things. I've seen numerous stocks with beautiful figure, but terrible grain flow. The world is full of straight grain, strong, very plain stocks.

12brd, Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, please don't shoot the messenger!
Hope you never drop those Shilos, the feather is coming from the wrong direction and either one could snap like a tooth pick. Especially teh upper stock with a heavy barrel.
Feather crotch is beautiful, but only with good wrist grain and that almost only comes with the feather running from comb nose towards the toe. Doug's blank has about perfect layout for a straight grip.

I'm not worried. 2000 rds thru the 45-100/544gr bullet with 86 gr of Fg have field proofed the wood for me. Shiloh has always stood behind their product if there was any problem. If I dropped it, I might as well pull out the Buck knife and commit Harri Kari.

Only 1/3 feather but the wrist is straight.
