I am thinking about ordering a Model 21 from CSMC, At first, I was looking at buying a used 21, but would have had to have it restocked and then engraved to that of a Pigeon Grade model. After talking to some folks, I decide to stick with CSMC as the final cost would have been similar to ordering a new one made to my specs. Even Turnbull told me it was a "wash" and to go with CSMC. CSMC also made me a Fox that is stunning IMO and one that I love to hunt with. My question is around chokes. I don't like tubes and want good all around chokes. I plan to use it for mostly sporting clays/5 stand and some waterfowl with the occasional pigeon shoot thrown in. I was thinking about .015 and .025, as I can also manipulate the load to gain or increase pattern. What do you guys think about that combo? Thanks.
The rest of the gun will be; 32" bbl, matted rib, straight stock, checkered butt, slim beaver-tail, B carve checkering, 3" chambers.

Your chokes sound fine to me. When I ordered mine, I ordered a flat finish for the barrels because I was concerned about glare
distracting me. Also, don't forget to order a case when you order your gun!

Those chokes should be fine for what you want to shoot. I just received my 21 12ga from CSMC which I choked .015 & .020 for shooting sporting clays and ducks. They work great for clays I haven't tried them on the ducks yet but will in the fall. Good luck with yours!

I think your choice of chokes in .015 and .025 is about perfect for the uses you mention. I have been considering opening the chokes on a '74 Superposed with 30" bbls. that are currently m/f and I have about decided on .015 and .025. Better to be over-choked than under, and you can always open them, but you dang sure can't "close" them. A few spreaders in your bag help when you have those really close shots.
I think I would stay with CSM's standard blue on the bbls. as it is superb, and a matte finish might look a little too utilitarian. Glare shouldn't be a problem, but I understand Hal wanting to take that out of the equation.
And unless you are just a confirmed, straight grip shooter who won't have anything else, I strongly recommend that you consider a pistol grip on your gun for the uses you have described. Straight grips are ok for field guns that aren't used in great volume, but a pistol grip gives you much better control on a target gun. Checkered butts are nice to look at, but for serious shooting, a pad will be much better.

If I were headed for a one gun for everything 21, I would be ordering a second set of barrels for pigeons and other long range games.

Kevin, As you remember I ordered a 20 and 28 combo with 30" barrels, fixed chokes at IC and IMOD. I feel that is a great all round combo. I also got the vent ribs.
If I was going to do it all over and if I was ordering a 12 I would get 30" barrels, standard rib not vent and Brileys installed by them.
That will make it a all around gun.

Bill Murphy Bill that is tempting and I am considering taking you up on your offer. My only concern is can a gentleman sub 6' tall comfortably shoot a gun with a 15 3/4" lop?

JR Thanks John and I hear you. I just prefer straight stocks and shoot them well enough. All my guns have checkered butts and they work fine for me. Yes, I have shot pistol and POW stocks along with pads. It is more of a personal preference. I also prefer double triggers but figured that since 95% of 21's had a ST then I should also get one, especially since they are so well designed and reliable. I would also like to order a 2nd set of bbls as I did with my Fox, but it was hard enough to get the wife's approval for this gun with one set, especially after the recent Fox order.

Kevin, I have shouldered the Fox and I think I could handle the long stock. If not, I'll have a talk with my orthopedic surgeon and see what adjustment he can make. I have a real big 32" Trap Grade with 14 3/4" pull. A lace on pad will make it suitable for you. Being serious, I'm real excited about your new project and can't wait to see how it turns out.
