If you want the joy of getting a gun by mail, send your long gun out for repair via U.S. Mail and they will have to return it to your house.

Send it out for a complete restoration and it will feel like you're getting a new gun.

Thanks for your memories and surprising "how to's", I've been inspired!

I
1) Found an 'antique' JABC -
(Straight Grip-Chain or Chainette Damascus?-Greener
Crossbolt-Engraving of some sort?)
2) Put it in "layaway", just like the Montgomery Ward catalog
($5.00 Down Balance In Six Monthly Payments!)
3) Confirmed it will come US Postal Service

Now, I'll have all the excitement of making my last layaway payment, and anxiously waiting for the mailman to bring it to my door and unwrap it to see what I got!

If this Rolling Block had been made prior to 1898 it could still be shipped directly to you today without any license being required.

Watch out which state
New Jersey restricts C&R

I know for sure that that a non FFL holder cannot ship a handgun via the U.S. Mail. This, unfortunately, makes it very difficult to arrange for factory authorized service.

I was not thinking about the FFL to FFL but I think that you are correct. You must, however, use U.S. Post Office Form 1508, which can only be used by bona fide "manufacturers or dealers of firearms":
