Talking about California Quail ("Valley" Quail) now, I haven't seen any chicks yet in Coast Range. I flushed a covey of adults last weekend in the Santa Ana Mountains (Eastern Orange County) and wondered why they were not paired up yet....not a good sign, I think. Also saw a covey of adults near Quail Hill south of Irvine.
Doubletrouble, I think I must have been just over the hill from you in Silverado Canyon; did all the fertile quail run over the mountains to your side?
Was in Hunter-Liggett two weeks ago and heard lots of calling in the canyons, but saw no chicks. No coveys either; just males doing lookout duty in trees. Do they do this when mama is hatching eggs?
