Roy, that is interesting. It is a fact that over the years Walter Clode and perhaps others such as Nick Holt have brought many fine guns out of India. I have been told at times the negotiations to lever away and procure these guns have taken years to complete once the firearm was found. An individual would need a reliable agent in country working on his behalf to inspect, push the proper paperwork and grease the wheels of the beauracracy when necessary. If I found a firearm for sale in India that by configuration or provenance was of significant interest to me, I would pursue it.

Modern times Westley Richards made a living buying guns back from India and putting them up for sale in the USA.

A few years ago I saw a lovely display of a W.R. double rifle in .270 Win. The story with the display was that at independence the manager of W.R. went to India and bought up a large quantity of their guns and rifles, brought them back to England, refurbished them and marketted them. This particular gun included stories of the many Tigers shot with it during its time in India. If I recall correctly it had been fitted with a second set of barrels in .375 and was sold to a doctor in Montana.
Sounds like many of us have heard various versions of the same story about Westley Richards.

I have an "out of India" H & H 16 Paradox currently getting its third set of wood (this one by James Tucker, Medford, OR). It was restocked in India with some local wood which looked like fence post and was about as tough as balsa. Not a great choice even for a light and fairly mild recoil piece!
The guy I bought it from said that Westley Richards aided him with the export issues. I think that would have been early 1990s at latest.
