I think the smooth bottom action just made for a nicer canvas for the engraver. I guess you missed my post.

Bells and whistles are the stuff of best guns. Lumps-thru, are like hand cranked windows on a luxury car - options of the less heeled budget minded client who's estate in in shambles.

OWD:
I noticed this years ago, and have always wondered why. Not sure there's an answer, but it isn't strength or price.

Through lump or not may have something to do with where the actions were sourced in some cases.

It is very interesting. There has to be a rational reason. I can't believe H&H was doing it on a whim. I'll see what I can find out.

Just posting observations and backing them up with facts - you know, contributing to the discussion. Those that can contribute to the discussion, while you offer only wind in the form of your self-invented, baseless dogma.

Thru lug is a better recoil lug (more bearing on the walls of the adjacent hollow square) and what's this stuff about "easier to machine"? What happened to easier to bore out and file by hand. CZapper had the answer in post #2. Who gives a smelly crap about "markers" for best guns? Any such marker badly executed is just froth on some Spanish no-name (bushed pins, breech clips, seven pins).

Hey nitro it's the best I can do, without channelling the olden makers. Why so agitated - makes one wonder?
