I don't know much about Colt's but hard rubber plates were definitely around the time the gun was made. And it has Colt's trademark on the plate. Very nice wood and overall condition. The hammer screws may have been replaced. Hard to tell from the photos. If the barrels are good, looks like a shooter to me.

I appreciate that...never would have guessed hard rubber buttplates were made that long ago. Yes, that's some fine looking wood under that gunk...seems extremely, extremely dry.

You would not believe how clean and new looking the lock internals and mortises are...looks like that were just made.
The only thing I can find mechanically in need of attention are that the bores need cleaning up...others mileage may vary of course

Looks nice. I am jealous. Very good looking wood grain and what I see of the metal. The hammer screws/nuts look correct to me.

Well, I wouldn't be TOO jealous...after all its a dad-blamed modern centerfire...be a lot better if it was a Flintlock !

PS: I thought the use of "nuts" on the end of the tumbler shafts was certainly different, eh?
I don't recall Flintlocks and Caplocks prior to that period having anything other than hammer screws that went into the tumblers...and...haven't seen any made since that period with other than hammer screws.

As much of an overall quality piece that the Colt SxS was when it was made, I doubt Colt would have designed the tumbler shaft that way just to save a few minutes of drilling & tapping a screw hole in the end of the tumbler shaft...puzzeling

RB, don't worry about jOe. Sometimes he contributes. Since you have a shot dead turkey in a photo, your stock may go up with jOe.

Looks like a nice original gun to me. Give it good care.

I agree. I am not sure how many people have looked at this gun via the links you provided. This is a graded Colt in excellent condition. It is yours and you can do as you wish with it. I would leave well enough alone. Get some RST shells and enjoy it.

No one said you were only allowed to have one type of shotgun. The beauty of these treasures are, they are not like women, we are allowed to have more than one. The others won't get jealous if they find us using one more than the other. You know me and that I have these in flint as well.

I think will find that your hammer nuts are original and these Colts didn't get screwed.
