IMHO,

I would enjoy it as is, and build a LR rifle from something else.

Both the NRA and ASSRA allow any non-bolt action singleshot rifle for mid-range and long-range matches. There are weight limits however. The rails for Redfield and Anschutz sights would not work as I would need about 2" of elevation on the sight to reach 1000yds. I have seen a dominant left eyed shooter that shoots right handed have a specially machined eyepiece that shifts it to the left but it was still on the tang. The WR that I have has had a small flat milled on the reciever ring so that a scope mt. could be attached. It already has one hole tapped in the receiver ring. Does anybody have thoughts about Paul Jaeger prices and can anybody tell me how to post pictures here??

here is a link for the how to of picture posting http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=6339&page=1#Post6339

I personally feel that the value will be in the WR action, not the Jaeger connection......just my view.

I don’t think anything you do with this would hurt the value. Built what you want on the action and good luck.

Bob:

From what I see in the pictures only the action has real value, and unfortunately it appears to have been abused by a buffing wheel. By all means do what you want with it. Or sell it to me...Personally, I would recommend the later.

It would make a fine Creedmoor rifle, but not necessarily an authentic one. I don't think any W-R '97s were made in target configuration. The long range matches were pretty much over before its introduction, at least for the large bore single shots. None the less it is a way cool action and would make an interesting and unique rifle. The action would be legal in both NRA and World sanctioned matches.

Best,

Glenn

Bob if your action, like mine, has a kicking ejector, I suggest that it would be wasted on a target rifle.

Thank you Michael for posting my pictures. I've been thinking along the lines of most here that the value is in the action only and that's why I bought it. Glenn, it has had most of the word Westley removed in the name Westley Richards. It appears to have been done with a surface grinder as the sides of the receiver are still flat and no buffed screw holes. Your right about the action not being used in Creedmoor shooting. Those rifles were built on the Gibbs Farquharson. The Westley Richards started out based on the Deeley Edge Patent and had a side lever until they fell from favor and it was redesigned with an underlever. Most of the WR Farquharson actions were actually built for them by Francotte in Belgium. I'll bring it along to Lodi in 3 weeks. MK, I've been looking at the kicking extractor. and from schematics it would be easy to remove the extractor spring. Bob

Jaeger bolt guns are fairly plentiful and not too expensive around Philly. In my opinion, only the engraved guns have much actual monetary value. I would not even be sure that this 1897 was stocked by Jaeger. I agree with the others, do what you want.
