Larry is correct about the pressure. I goofed and quoted the provisional proof pressure.

Larry, I think that the rampant lion over PV just means nitro proof. As far as I know it is the standard mark on all nitro proof guns; PV means Poudre Vivre. Superior nitro proof is either a crown over PV or PV in an oval with a crown above and a laurel wreath around the oval. If the laurel wreath is missing it would be standard proof. That gun will have been made when modern type 3" magnum ammo was not around. Lagopus.....

I have some pictures of the gun below. It came out of Manton's shop in Calcutta. The gun weighs 7 3/4 lbs with the stock being 4 1/8" through the wrist. I like them that small but it isn't doesn't seem like much wood for that level of recoil. Is there a point where SAAMI standards chganged for the 3" load? It is currently listed at between 19,000 psi and 20,500 psi.

HERE is a link to the maker's website. It has Janssen Freres Fabricants L' Armes Liege on the top rib.

I have a 1937 Janssen catalog with a Model 104. Similar, but much less engraving, priced at 800 francs, 1000 francs with ejectors.

Here is some more about Janssen.

Is there any JF in circle mark on the gun?
If not, probably this gun made by another Belgian maker, by Lebeau-Courally even or Defourny-Sevrin etc.
It's possible to find out about it by gun s/n.

Geno, the sn is 37934. I don't see a JF on the gun based on any of the pictures. Would it be someplace other than the water table or barrel flats?

The weight I was given earlier has been corrected. According to the gunsmith it is 3 kg 700 grams. If I translated it correctly that comes out to 8 lbs, 2 1/2 oz. I am told it feels deceptively lighter than that. Also, the circumference through the wrist is a slightly larger 4 1/4". The barrels are 32".

Lagopus, according to the Kennett article on Belgian proof, the rampant lion over PV is indeed just an indicator of nitro proof. However, under the rules of 1924--and this is a post-1924 gun, by the proofmarks--the standard pressures were different depending on gauge and chamber length: 12,900 psi for standard 12 or 16ga; 14,700 psi for smaller gauges. But if chambers were longer than 2 3/4", then standard proof was 14,700 psi for the 12ga.
