According to "The Shooting Wire", based on a report from a San Diego TV station that used a forensic firearms expert, a lot of the guns the cartels use DO come from the US--just not from dealers, nor from illegal transactions. Rather, they come from our GOVERNMENT--to the Mexican military, and from the Mexican military to the cartels, thanks to deserting soldiers. (The Mexican Army obviously does not have the same arms room discipline as the US Army!)
Reminds me of the guerrilla war in El Salvador some 20 years ago. Here's the liberal American reporter, down there with the guerrillas, doing his report. They're walking around with M-16's and M-60's, which he assures his viewers were all captured from government troops. About that time, a guy with an RPG strolls by behind him, at which point I start screaming at the TV, telling the stupid MF to turn around. My wife thinks I've gone nuts, until I point out that we don't have RPG's in our inventory, so that weapon obviously came from elsewhere--like maybe Fidel or the Russkies. And did that reporter by any chance think to copy down serial numbers off the M-16's and M-60's--which could've just as easily gotten there by way of Vietnam, where we left a whole bunch of them behind. And which could be verified by SN, if checked with the US government.
