The top safety, I understand, was to cater for the American market; something to do with avoiding litigation like those heavy trigger pulls on factory supplied rifles. They could not seem to get the hammer shape right in my opinion. They were certainly colour hardened in Birmingham as I have been in the place where they were done on a number of occasions.
