i know the feeling admiral. just missed out on examining lil' parker bros vhe 20br. gee, with 10k price tag i didn't think it would sell quite so soon.

No argument from me. I wouldn't want any of the three guns you point the finger to. The difference in some gun dealers and some used car dealers is in name only!

As you know, the stars light up in my eyes when I am looking at something of vintage quality that remains in high condition. You'll have to see the John Dickson & Son round action 12b I bought last Saturday. 1929 date remaining in high condition, never touched.

Prolly paid too much though. All those stars glaring in my eyes. But then I ask, "When will I ever see another one in this condition?" You pay the price because life is so short. He who waits has denied himself the pleasure. Bob Cash said it right in his post above. Never saw a Brinks truck in the funeral procession to the cemetery did you?

You have the advantage of youth. I'm past the midpoint. As the years roll by you will understand how short the run is. Grab the brass ring when it passes by. It might not come again.





Oh, and please excuse me for not having proper tools for measuring a shotgun bore. I'm really a rifle person. These are Cerrosafe casts made 14" back from the muzzles (about midway).

Now that's the kind of gun you should pay top dollar for - something that you don't see every day, all original, lots of condition.

Very nice - congratulations.

Barnett had a SxS Woodward with that kind of condition. The price was high, but not insanely high (like the Lang in my first post). The Woodward because it was worth it.

Yeah, we kinda have two conversations going here. You initially pointed out junk for sale at high prices.

Then we migrated to good stuff at high prices.

The latter makes sense; the former does not.

Still, prices on good stuff are frighteningly high. That's where you have to question your philosophy of life, etc.

I've been out and about in western Washington this week and I was amazed at the number of interesting guns for sale at what certainly appeared to be reasonable prices to me. I saw a large number of Browning Superposeds including Pigeon and Diana grades and many Grade 1s including two Superlites. Nice NIDs in Grade 1 and 4E. Ansley H. Fox 12-gauges in AE- and CE-Grades both with ejectors and SST, as well as some indifferent Sterlingworths. Two Parker Bros. DHE 12-gauges. Maybe the economy is starting to bring some more interesting guns to the shops.

If you look through Holt's auction results for today, I think you will see a pattern of high end stuff going over high estimate and low end stuff either not selling or trending to low estimate.

Apples and oranges. A trade-built 1890 "Royal" retailed by Holland and a between the wars Holland-built Royal are entirely different guns, especially in terms of value. You have to compare similar guns to have a valid comparison.
