I'm no expert on gun values and pricing. I'm probably the big fool who gets robbed each time I buy. But I do know that on several occasions I have lusted for a gun but held back thinking it over-priced. Next thing I knew, the gun was sold to somebody else, and I wished I had paid the price. This just happened recently, in fact.
That's one of the functions of the free market system, as noted above.
I guess the moral to the story is: If you think the gun is priced too high, just don't buy. Make your best offer and wait. Either it will sell to somebody else, or the seller will be stuck with it, or the seller will change his mind and take your offer. It's business, not romance. There should be no hard feelings.

Curl, I couldn’t agree with you more. I too suspect I get robbed every time I buy a double, but I am happy with my collection. Another point to keep in mind is; Running a business isn’t cheap, One may have premises to maintain and insure, employees and all the associated payroll costs, the costs to keep a website up and enough cash for an inventory and to keep everything paid between sales. If you think the price on a gun is too high don’t buy it.

All this talk of money - bad form! Guns stand own their own, no matter what big money you've said you spent.

PM,
I don't know how many there were or are, but only one of those mentioned H&H's is a Pigeon, the other is a plain "Royal". I would bet the one I own, that there are more "between the wars" H&H's than there are ones like my 1890 "Royal" with the "Rigby" side locks, in great condition with original barrels and stock, and a "Queen Victoria Crest" engraved on the silver oval. This is the same one I was told was only worth $5K to $7K on this board, so what has how many there are, got to do with the price...all of a sudden???

Lowell,
We WERE talking about prices asked for guns by different dealers, not how much they were actually sold for, cause we don't know that information. I stated that Steve Barnett's prices were high, and I stand by that statement. I've made my case by showing a couple of his ads, and if someone can SHOW OR PROVE me wrong, I am ready to listen.
I believe a gun is worth what is paid for it if the buyer is happy, but that ain't got nothing to do with whether or not the price asked was too high, because it's either too high or it isn't to high according to market value. If someone buys it for the TOO HIGH price that's cool, but the fact that the gun sold has nothing to do with whether the asking price was too high according to mkt. value.
In analyzing prices, you have to have a standard to go by, and I believe the standard is "market value" not what some "starry-eyed fool" actually paid for it!

Anyone who loudly complains about the high price of a gun the owner is asking $12,000 for obviously is not willing or able to write the check for the $9500 that will often buy the gun. I avoid this situation by paying the asking price for any gun I can't live without, at least the ones I can pay for.

I've met Steve, bought from him and sold to him too. I find him to be a gentleman and a straight shooter (pardon the pun).
Call me "starry eyed" but it's my understanding that you only live once. Life is short, and to forego a beauty for the sake of a couple of dollars leads me to believe that some have more time than money. Wait as long as you like and search for the right gun at the right price. Free market economics gives you license to "shop 'til the cows come home". I'd rather shoot.
If money were meant to be hung on to, they'd have made it with handles.

I am fairly new to collecting guns. I have bought from both dealers and persons from gun shows. My biggest fear is that I pay what I think is a fair price from a private owner only to find out that it is or was a stolen gun. From a dealer you have recourse, from a private owner you are out a nice gun and your money. It takes overhead to run a business. If the prices are too high, look elsewhere.

Guys- come one. Give me a break.
None of those guns are in the "live without" category. That's part of the reason why their prices are so crazy.
The Lang is nice, but it's a plain gun. Even if it said "Purdey" on it, it wouldn't be worth $18,000. That price is just silly.
The Woodward and Boss are tired & wornout - way beyond their prime. They have ZERO condition. A dealer has just buffed them up a bit and he's trying to trick some fool into paying way too much for a famous name.
Sure, a dealer can ask what he wants. Just like I can say what I want about their crazy prices.
OWD
BTW: my mom told me to speak my mind and tell the truth.

With all their (dealers) overpriced and mis represented inventory, I wonder how they stay in business?
