I've read of several Fox Sterlingworth custom upgrades where the barrelsmith struck off the "Sterlingworth Fluid Compressed Steel" barrel legend to make the barrel look more pleasing. Of course a good barrel man wouldn't leave a flat spot where the legend was, but I wonder how successful that technique can be if the legend is deeply imprinted as they usually are? If anyone has such an upgrade I'd appreciate your perspective if the barrel breech looks "normal" and round in that area, or if there's an obvious oval profile if you look carefully. Thanks for any inputs. Silvers

Hello Frank,
I did one a few years ago and had the same issue to deal with but instead of striking the stamp off and compromise bbl thickness, I filled/tig welded the stamp over and engraved something more subtle where the stamp used to be and the word fox on the bottom of the frame, if you look at the first picture, you can faintly see the weld, once rust blued it blended in perfectly.... I thought it looked pretty nice

Thanks CJ. You do very nice work. I suppose TIG'ing is something to be considered but I'd have to find out more about possible negative effects on the metallurgy, etc. before going ahead with that option on this potential project. Frank

Bad family history!
I'd strike Krupp's name also.

Most barrel steel can be TIG'ed without any problem. The service I'm looking for is someone who can weld up bore pits and refinish. Much the same idea as welding up a stamp mark on the outside.

Agreed with R'Man on the mechanics of it. That however would not seem to be the real issue here, the Question is "WHY". Is the Fox marked ""Sterlingworth Fluid Compressed Steel"" beneath your Dignity. You are i presume totally aware that "Forging" the name Krupp did not change the steel, you still have ""Sterlingworth Fluid Compressed Steel"" whatever that happens to be. I would stronglt suspect this was done to allow Fox to source their bbl steel from different makers without the necessity of changing their marking.
"Tough crowd!!"
Well maybe 30 days is a little severe, perhaps 29 would be sufficient or should it be meted out in Feb 28 would do.
Point is though while I have no problem with added engraving as such or better wood etc, However to alter the markings simply should not be done & in particular to place a name which likely violates copyright laws.
Do you Honestly & Actually believe your gun is no longer a "Sterlingworth" or will that knowledge "Gnaw" upon your inner soul every time you gaze your peepers upon that "Krupp" marking. Why did you not just spend the money invested to buy a higher grade & leave a classic gun, no longer made as is??? There are many of us not so snooty but we would carry a Sterlingworth with pride.
Would you be equally content to buy a Timex & have the name replaced with Rolex??
Just one man's take.
I think people both doing this work & having it done need to take a "Loooong Hard Look" at their Motives.

Miller,..do you really think for a moment that if I was purposely trying to misrepresent something I would write about it and post pictures for all to see!!.... Maybe you should question your motive for assuming the wrong thing.....If you would have simply bothered to ask I could have told you why,...maybe the thing was already a wreck when I acquired it,..maybe it was a Savage era Sterlingworth put together with leftover parts,..maybe I didn't like the way the "Krupp Fluid Steel Made By" was double stamped over with the "Savage arms" punch!.. too many maybes,..instead you decide to question my motives, basically call me a crook....don't be so quick to judge next time.

All best,

CJ

BTW...I do own an shoot a nice little 20 Sterlingworth that shall remain untouched,.....as well as a Rolex
