The good mews is that elephant populations are on the rebound through much of Southern Africa. And largely due to sport hunting. The ivory ban has worked because it made an exception through CITES for a hunter to bring home legally taken ivory. Two decades of bush wars gradually ended in the late eighties meaning there are now a lot of 30-50 lb bulls. Another 20 years and just a bit of luck and 60 - 80's will again be achievable. Unfortunately, as Mugabe demonstrates, any one of these countries can revert to something worse than even tribalism. In that environment, an elephant will only be so much protein.
