I’ve spent the better part of last week working on my new restoration project so thought I would report a little. First I apologize for the poor photos, shop camera.

Before I did anything I refinished the buttplate and rust blued it, I don’t like to work with a finished stock without the buttplate. I also refinished and rust blued the triggerguard, lower metal, bolt, extractor, collar and installed a Lyman No.1. Refinished the guard screws and Niter blued them. The barrel was a mess, a heavy hand with a course file. I took it up to John’s yesterday and he put the barreled action between centers and cleaned it up for me, more polishing to be done.

Did you fill the holes on the right side of the action?

Just looked closer at your photo and I can see the screws. What will you do with them?

This rifle would have had originally a low-number 1903 action and barrel that is now separated from the stock. The rifle came with a circa 1921 barreled action that was drilled for a Lyman 48 I will leave the filler screws in it for now. If I ever find a circa 1913-15 rifle I might replace the one that's with it but until then this one will have to do.

For all the folks who think there are no good deals left, this stock was found on a gunshow table and bought for $25. It's a long story but a well known Montana gunmaker lent his copy of my book to his fishing partner who then recognized the stock and bought it.

I did the same thing, went to your book that is. Are you able to call this a Adolf rifle or is it a G&H?

Unless any new information comes to light this is an early Adolph. It will make a nice companion piece to the K-Adolph below.

Wundhammer Restoration Completed!

I would like to thank the following people without whose help this would have been impossible.

Gary Bush: For alerting me to the stock and for supplying the Lyman 48 long-slide as well as the bolt.

Don Wooldridge: For supplying the proper NRA sales rifle.

Barry DeLong: For supplying the Ross Barrel band sling swivel.

John Beard: For making sure I had all the proper parts for the rifle.

John Wills: For help turning the rifle between centers to bevel the front of the receiver, contouring the barrel, making the barrel bushing for the threaded front and for grinding the tang.

Jim White: For checkering the panel on the underside of the bolt.

Monte Mandarino: For repairing the stock and blueing the barreled action.

Very nice Michael! I must admit, when you started with a stock to restore a rifle, I thought you a bit touched, but only 15 months later you've got a great example of a rare vintage rifle.
Congratulations and well done!

Beautiful rifle.

Kind of reminds me of the "restoration" of a Japanese plane found in a south Pacific jungle. Once the work was done only a couple of original frame tubes made it to the "restoration". The rest was too deteriorated to use, but they did start with the wreck so it counts.

Thanks Steve. A bit touched you say, that's one of the milder ones I've heard regarding this project. I am very happy with the rifle and although it did take a while the end result was worth it. I believe that everything was done the way Mr. Wundhammer would have done it. I think that I should start marking these with a mark that can be seen without taking the rifle apart. A subject that should be discussed one day.
