Company touts tungsten as greener metal for lures, bullets

http://www.headwatersnews.org/stories/redirect.php?id=59607

The chief executive officer of North American Tungsten Corp. Ltd. said tungsten is an environmentally friendly alternative to lead, making it the perfect metal to make fishing lures, bullets and buckshot.

Tungsten is 1.7 times as dense as lead. Ergo, there is room for 41%, by weight, of something else in tungsten shot or bullets. It might, in fact, be possible to make a tungsten filled elastomeric bullet that expanded on impact and then contracted as it lost velocity Maybe, even recyclable; One bullet is all you will ever need!

Tungsten is a strategic mineral, with close to zero percent of world consumption produced in the US. The Chinese, who produce most of it, and saw prices fall to near record low levels, are, in fact, stockpiling it.

Do the math.

Are you saying tungsten is as soft as lead, ergo safe to use in older vintage doubles? I hope you are saying that! Chopper

Chopper, I don't think that's right. Tungston matrix is OK for sxs barrels, not tungston alone...Geo

I've shot cases upon cases of Kent TM and Federal TP through old guns including damascus without a bit of trouble.

Chop, no, tungsten is way hard. However, if the shot/bullet was made as a soft-coat-over-core, IMO it could be perfectly OK. We are not there yet, to my knowledge, but there seems to exist the possibility. Say we made core shot of a tin/tungsten mix/alloy and then copper plated it. Then we would could have a pellet of lead density(0.41#/cubic inch), made with tin and tungsten (0.264 #/cubic inch plus 0.697 #/cubic inch), plated with a suitable thickness of copper (0.323 #/cubic inch) to prevent barrel damage in the event of barrel-pellet contact. Of course, there may be many other choices of modern plastics for the matrix.

I think TM cost about .75-$1 or was it $3 per cartridge (I think $75 per box, doesnt make for much shooting for me. I have used it a couple of times at GH shooting over the ponds there, no problem in our doubles.
