WW Greener's ran into this problem in recent years when making their new damascus-barreled guns -- plenty of tubes, no ribs to match. Tried to have a damascus knife maker make some but when browned did not match the tubes. Finally located some old ribs unused. Also, they are taking old damascus scrapper barrels, then quartering them lengthwise, then milling out ribs from the resulting quarters. They are many ways to skin a cat in craft gunmaking.

Drew, That is not my CE-Grade Remington. I think you are using a picture of the Chain J Damascus barrels on my early BE-Grade Grade Remington in your Damascus Picture Trail.

More often then not the ribs are different pattern than the barrels but I have seen them matching also. There is a great book called Three Centuries of Liege Gun making. It has a lot of info on the making of Damascus barrels and their construction

Sorry Dave.
I've still got about two hundred pics to look through, but have come up with a bunch of good examples of tubes and ribs with the same, or very different composition here

Certainly the ribs did not require the strength of the barrels, and ease of manufacture and aesthetics had to be factors.

This is an interesting thread I have done a few guns recently, some with nice patterned ribs, some with nice barrels and plain ribs! how many different styles of ribs are there?

Thanks Paul and I'll get those added.
I've started a 'Ribs' chapter on DamascusKnowledge but suspect I'll be working on it for some time. Need to review all the links and references for a specific discussion about rib production. http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfg2hmx7_293fxzspwc3
