Finally got all my pictures from this past season developed, thought I'd share a few:

Argentina in July, whitecheek pintails over the decoys. Yes that's a humpback, I don't shoot a double all the time.

Argentina again, a cool double retrieve on yellowbilled pintail.

Opening day for doves in Illinois. My Grandfather at 90 years old with his little straight grip JC Higgins 20 gauge that Dad restocked for him years ago.

A rainy day for early geese in Michigan. Jim with his broken wing, he still killed two that day shooting one handed believe it or not.

Opening day for early geese in Ontario.

My friend Nathan's young dog Stone making his first ever retrieve on game. The look on his face was priceless, it's like he's saying "What the hell is this thing".

Railbird shooting in Virgina after the Vintagers.

My pusher Gregory hard at work.

Sinkbox shooting in Quebec.

A nice view of Don and Russ in the box ready for action.

A trophy for me on opening day in Southern Illinois. I've killed shovelers before but never a drake in plumage oddly enough.

My friend Flanders and a nice bull canvasback in Ontario. He had big problems that day, the hammer screw on Parker had broken off so he was shooting single shot. He still killed his birds though, I was pretty impressed.

A view from the blind, Reelfoot Lake right after Christmas.

Me, Dad, Wally's Brother in Law, and Wally Vernon all at Reelfoot. We didn't wear them out but we got a few and had an awful good time doing it.

End of the season in Ontario, it was 14 degrees with the wind blowing 40mph.

The river all frozen, we had to put in a long way from where we hunted. If you think that wasn't a cold boat ride you're wrong....

Nathan with a prize banded pintail drake he'd killed that day.

Last shoot of the year out on the Eastern Shore. John Davis and I with hammer 10 bore Parkers.

One for Lowell, same trip, in the pigeon ring at Philly.

Wow- what great fotos. thanks for sharing. Your GrandDad still with us and shooting at 90- Bless him- what a great tradition and using that "special shotgun" too- special to him I'll bet.

As we both know, we don't get any "dove action" in our State of Grand Holm-but as I have read Nash B. and his words of gunner's wisdom about the dove as being a challenge supreme to the avid shotgunner, I've also read that about rails-especially jump shooting. Never had the chance, but even the late Paul A. Curtis stated he had his worse percentage shooting on rails from a pushboat-and how about the retrive, aren't they hard to mark and then find in those thick reeds? What double were you using for the rails?

In my experience with waterfowl, divers from a layout boat in a choppy November gray day are the greatest test, then jump shooting from a canoe or float boat- very easy to 'rush your shot(s) when Mallards spook, and often, behind you depending on the current and cover- But rails-Wow- I'll bet that is indeed a real thrill, and if you ever made a true double on those, Wow doubled and redoubled. Great fotos--RWTF

Wonderful pics Destry. Your Grandpa at 90 is a very young looking, hopefully you'll be gunning with him for some time yet.

Fox,

I've never found rails to be that tough to hit oddly enough. They get up pretty slowly and don't flush at any great distance. I've only ever had one right and left on them. They're like woodcock, you don't see two in the air at once very often. Though another guy I know shoots them in Georgia and has had several doubles so I guess it just depends on the day. I was shooting the old family Stevens 311 on that trip. It's cylinder and cylinder, perfect for railbirds as 30 yards is a long shot. I think we only lost one bird in two days gunning and that was a swimming cripple, Gregory has been pushing since he was a kid and can find them everytime.

Bam,
Grandpa does look young for his age, I will agree. He's still got some dark in his hair if you can believe it. We were born on the same day, June 10th. There's no telling how many doves and quail that little JC Higgins has killed. Dad bought the stock as a blank with only the head semi-inletted from Herter's back in the 60's. It originally had a tenite buttstock on it, still has the forend.

Destry, great pictures, you do get around. It's great that your dad and grandfather still love to go out and shoot.

I was just over in St. Charles this past weekend to see Dad put into the Illinois Outdoor Hall of Fame. I don't remember the last time I felt so proud of anything.

Grandpa is slowing down but he still goes dove shooting, bluegill fishes a bit, and keeps a vegatable garden.
