Brian, I did a pretty thourough search in Hornady's ballistics charts. They give velocity, energy, trajectory, but no pressure data whatsoever. Stay safe!

Brian,

Better to post this question on the accuratereloading.com double rifle forum.

Reckon it's hard to give Hornady a call from your aor... Can't imagine that the Hornady pressure is more than what the old British rules list at 16 tons/sq.in.

I've seen two pressures listed for the .405 Winchester, one at 44,000 CUP; the other this from Chuckhawks: "Current SAAMI specs call for a maximum mean pressure of 34,000 psi for the .405 Winchester."

Bottom line would likely be (subject to accurate conversion of tons/sq. in.) that the 450/400 3-inch gives more pressure than the .405 Win maximum...

Brian:

CIP Max Average Pressure for the .450/.400 3" NE is 2800 BAR/40,610 PSI. My understanding is that Hornady's factory ammunition operates at 5 - 7% below that.

I don't know what to tell you about SAAMI standard for the .405 Win. Too much conflicting data. Hornady says their factory ammunition runs around 40,500 PSI.

Brian,

Not sure I'd want to rechamber a .405 win to 450/400 3 in. if that's the direction you're going... I've seen various different bore measurements for both calibers.

400 Nitro would likely have a more soundly-based view on this question, and will likely chime in if asked, as opposed to my just speaking up .

Standard groove diameter for the .450/.400 has been .410" since 1913, and is CIP's standard today. CIP's standard groove diameter for the .405 is .413".
