Well, it's time to add another coat of oil (or 4) to my stocks.
I remember seeing a post a while back where someone used a chamois
and possibly rottenstone as a way to add a bit of sheen to an oil finish, but now
I can't find that post anywhere. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
If so please provide the details again.
I'd be much obliged.

Jim,

I, too remember that somebody recommended the use of a chamois to rub the hardened oil with to achieve a last best degree of polishing. I don't remember if I read it here or somewhere else.
Cheers.

Hey Sliver,
I'm pretty sure it was here.
I think the nugget of info came from one of the UK members or CC/DT.
Just not clear if rottenstone was part of the mix.
Anyone else?
Thanks,
Jim

before the stock could...

I can't remember the mention of using chamois, but I did suggest using a piece of leather, such as the tongue off an old shoe to do the stock rubbing to save wearing your palm away.

Salopian,
Thanks for refreshing my memory. It just so happens I was going to post my first coat
results with the chamois. Overall, very pleased with things so far. I wrapped the chamois
around a pair of socks (sort of like a french polish button). With the same amount
of effort, I'm able to generate more heat due to the extra friction. I think there's quite a
bit more luster rubbing out with the chamois compared to a bare hand too.
I think I will sprinkle some rottenstone on and rub that out on my final coat, but I
will add a couple more coats before that. I have a pic, but don't know how to post.
Thanks,
Jim
